SDMS Members,

As part of our commitment to providing relevant informational resources to our members, I am excited to share with you the newly released Sonography Education: Incidental Findings in Scan Labs SDMS white paper. The SDMS white papers are designed to facilitate discussions on the complex issues affecting our profession. We know that scan labs are vital to the overall success of our sonography programs and this white paper will be of most interest to our educators and the clinical sites for our sonography students. While we recognize that there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution, the Sonography Education: Incidental Findings in Scan Labs SDMS white paper addresses topics such as:

  • How to handle the occurrence of incidental findings in the scan lab,
  • The various documents and forms that scan labs can use to protect models and minimize the program’s liability, and
  • Strategies for the development of effective policies and procedures related to the use of scan lab models and the discovery and disclosure of incidental findings in the scan lab.

This white paper also includes case studies designed to illustrate the different ways a program can address incidental findings in the scan lab. If you have a scan lab, I encourage you to use this white paper to start a discussion with your program officials to adequately prepare for the possibility of incidental findings within your program. You can also post your questions or share your personal experience addressing incidental findings in the scan lab using the SDMS Collaborate Community.

Thank you for being a valued SDMS member and a special thank you to our educators for teaching the next generation of sonographers. You make a difference.

If you have suggestions for future SDMS white papers, please contact the SDMS at: executivestaff@sdms.org

Sincerely,

Tammy Stearns
